How to open an M3U file on Windows

Your IPTV provider sent you a file ending in .m3u or .m3u8, and Windows doesn’t know what to do with it? No surprise: the file isn’t a video, it’s a list. Here’s what’s inside and how to open it.

What is an M3U file?

An M3U file is a plain text file. It holds a list of channels or videos: for each entry a name and the address where the stream runs. M3U8 is the same thing, saved in a text encoding that safely stores accents and other scripts.

Opened in Notepad, an M3U file looks roughly like this:

#EXTM3U
#EXTINF:-1 tvg-id="example1" group-title="News",Example News
http://tv.example.net/live/anna/••••/1001.ts
#EXTINF:-1 tvg-id="example2" group-title="Sports",Example Sports
http://tv.example.net/live/anna/••••/1002.ts

The #EXTINF lines describe the channel (name, group, an ID for the TV guide), and the line below is the stream address.

Option 1: with an IPTV player (recommended)

An IPTV player turns the list into proper TV, with categories, logos and a TV guide. Here’s how it works in Finally:

  1. 1Save the file. Save the attachment from the email, for example to “Downloads”.
  2. 2Open Finally and choose Add playlist, tab M3U file.
  3. 3Drag the file into the field or pick it. Finally reads the channels, sorts them and loads the TV guide if your provider includes one.
Channel list in Finally: channels with logos and what’s on now
The M3U file becomes a tidy channel list.

Option 2: with VLC

VLC opens M3U files too: Media → Open File (Ctrl + O) or drag the file into the VLC window. The channels then appear in the playlist (Ctrl + L). There’s no TV guide and no categories there. More in the guide IPTV with VLC.

Option 3: look inside with Notepad

If you only want to see what’s in the file: right-click it, Open with → Notepad. That way you can check whether it contains channels and starts with #EXTM3U. Don’t change anything unless you know exactly what you’re doing.

Nothing happens, or you get an error

  • The file is tiny or contains HTML: an error page was saved instead of the list. Download the file again or ask your provider.
  • Channels don’t load: the subscription has expired, or the addresses in the file have changed. Many providers send a new file then.
  • The file is old: M3U files don’t update themselves. An M3U link or an Xtream login stays current when your provider adds channels. Ask for one if you have the choice.

Questions

What’s the difference between M3U and M3U8?

Content-wise, none. M3U8 is saved as UTF-8 and reliably shows accents and other scripts. You open both the same way.

Can I open an M3U file with Windows Media Player?

It opens some simple lists, but it isn’t made for IPTV: it doesn’t handle large channel lists, TV guides or categories. Use an IPTV player or VLC instead.

Is an M3U file dangerous?

The file itself is just text. But it often contains your login details in the addresses. Don’t share it and don’t upload it anywhere.

Where do I get an M3U file?

From your IPTV provider, usually by email after you buy. Finally doesn’t sell or recommend playlists. More on that here.
